Growing up with parents who were musicians in the band Chakula was a unique experience. As a child, I didn’t fully grasp the significance of my parents’ work until I got older. In the 1990s, being part of a Rastafarian family meant facing societal stigmas. Our household was vibrant yet serious, with every decision aimed at bettering humanity. This environment shaped my morals and influenced my musical journey. Having a home studio was rare at the time, and it laid the foundation for my craft today.
Life in Tanzania
One memorable adventure was moving to Tanzania with my family. My mother announced the move one day, and we had to learn about this new place quickly. It was a significant change, as we didn’t know the language or culture. We explored national parks and even had a close encounter with a stampede of elephants! Another striking memory was witnessing a tribal ritual where adolescents transitioned into manhood. Tanzania holds a special place in my heart and remains my second home.
First Job and Musical Calling
My first job was as a janitor during my university days. It was a challenging time financially, but I knew music was my true calling. Even while cleaning stadiums, I stayed focused on my musical aspirations. At that time, I had a number one song on the Billboard Reggae charts, yet my university peers were unaware of my musical achievements. It felt like leading a double life, but my vision kept me driven.
Musical Instruments
My primary instrument is the guitar, which I use to write most of my songs and perform. Learning the guitar taught me about melodies and singing, beyond just the words. This knowledge has also allowed me to dabble in bass and understand music production better. My father’s insistence on learning an instrument has been instrumental in my musical journey.

It explores personal stories and global perspectives, with a focus on the struggles and triumphs of living in a third-world country. For aspiring musicians, the most important thing is to focus on mastering your craft and getting your music heard. Great music will resonate with people and spread organically. Touring is essential, but it’s the quality of your records that will ultimately define your legacy.
