Ghanaian artist Moliy’s hit song “Shake It To The Max (Fly)” has become a global sensation, thanks to her strategic decision to let the song gain traction organically before its official release. This approach has proven to be highly successful.
The viral journey of “Shake It To The Max (Fly)” began with a simple yet captivating dance move—a smooth waist rotation paired with rhythmic jumps, all set to the infectious beat of Moliy and Silent Addy’s dancehall-house fusion track. The dance’s simplicity made it instantly appealing, quickly spreading across social media platforms like TikTok.
For Moliy (real name Molly Ama Montgomery), the viral success was unexpected, especially since she had planned to take a musical hiatus that year. She released a snippet of the song in October 2024, not anticipating the immense response it would garner.
“It was well-received, but I knew something special was happening when people started mimicking the dance,” Moliy shared with OkayAfrica. The snippet sparked a wave of creativity, with over 235,000 TikTok videos created using the sound, amassing over a million streams on Spotify, and securing a top 20 spot on the UK Afrobeats Chart.
Despite the pressure to capitalize on the song’s virality, Moliy remained calm and strategic. She waited nearly three months before officially releasing the track in December. This delay didn’t dampen the song’s momentum; instead, it allowed the anticipation to build.
“I’ve been relaxed throughout this process because I’m savoring the moment,” Moliy explained. “Many people felt the urgency for me, worrying that I might miss the opportunity. But I believed in the song’s longevity. I never intended to release music that year; I was just sharing snippets.”
The calculated risk paid off, with a remix featuring dancehall stars Shenseea and Skillibeng released on February 21, further amplifying the song’s reach and impact.
